Debut performance at Sharjah International Book Fair enthrals audienceswith a masterful blend of comedy, suspense and cultural reflection

Sharjah, November 16, 2024

Merging comedy and horror is a delicate balance, but when executed with finesse, it creates an unforgettable experience. At the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2024), the Kuwaiti play “Al-Yathum” achieved just that. Debuting on Friday, the performance took the audience on a whirlwind journey of laughter, tension, and poignant social commentary, all while celebrating the rich cultural unity that defines the region.

The play opened on a chilling note, setting the stage for a gripping narrative. As the theatre lights dimmed, a piercing scream echoed, instantly captivating the audience and ensuring their undivided attention.

At its core, “Al-Yathum” tells the story of Waheed, a solitary figure whose quiet life is disrupted by mysterious and unsettling events in his home. In an effort to combat his isolation, he rents out the second floor of his house. However, his would-be tenants are soon driven away by the same inexplicable occurrences, sparking a sequence of events that intertwines humour with suspense.

Using this intriguing premise, the play delves into universal social issues such as bullying, cultural stereotypes, and the influence of external trends on local traditions. Through witty dialogue, sharp humour, and moments of chilling intensity, these themes are seamlessly woven into a narrative that resonates deeply with the audience.

The stellar cast, including Abdulrahman Al Aqel, Zahra Arafat, Fahad Al Bannai, Mohammed Al Ramadan, Naif Al Anazi, and Lama Ameer, delivered standout performances. Their impeccable chemistry and sharp banter kept the audience entertained, while their references to Sharjah, the UAE, and SIBF 2024 added a layer of relatability and cultural relevance.

Beyond the laughs and scares, Al-Yathum underscored the importance of community cohesion and the challenges posed by societal pressures. The production’s clever fusion of entertainment and reflection left attendees not only with smiles and laughter but also with a sense of deeper understanding.
