Javier Hidalgo: “The new route between Madrid and Abu Dhabi strengthens Spain’s role as a global aviation hub”

The alliance between Air Europa and Etihad Airways marks a new chapter in Globalia’s international strategy, reinforcing Madrid’s position as a key gateway between Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Javier Hidalgo, CEO of Globalia, welcomed the agreement announced between Air Europa and Etihad Airways, which will link Madrid with Abu Dhabi through a codeshare partnership. According to Hidalgo, this is “a strategic milestone that not only improves connectivity between critical regions, but also places Spain at the heart of the global aviation map.”

Through this alliance, Air Europa will offer its passengers new connections to the Middle East, India, Asia and Oceania via Etihad-operated flights. At the same time, the Emirati airline will market Air Europa-operated routes to Latin America, enhancing a more integrated global network.

“Modern aviation demands smart alliances that improve operational efficiency and passenger experience. This step reinforces that vision,” added Javier Hidalgo.

A decisive move toward international expansion

This agreement reflects Air Europa’s steady transformation into a long-haul, intercontinental carrier. Madrid-Barajas is solidifying its role as a natural air bridge between the Americas and Asia, and this new link to Abu Dhabi opens up opportunities for business, tourism and institutional cooperation between Europe and the Gulf region.

The alliance also aligns with the logic of an increasingly interconnected aviation market, where collaboration between airlines helps optimize routes, increase frequencies and boost competitiveness. As part of the Globalia group, Air Europa strengthens its growth strategy following significant progress in fleet modernization and sustainability.

Javier Hidalgo and Globalia’s forward-looking strategy

Although he did not lead the negotiations directly, Javier Hidalgo has played a key role in positioning Globalia and Air Europa in global forums related to aviation and international investment. His vision has helped consolidate strategic relations in the Middle East, a region that is gaining prominence as a global hub for commercial aviation.

With this new route, Globalia takes a firm step toward the group’s internationalization, staying true to its commitment to efficient, modern, and passenger-focused air travel. Hidalgo’s voice as a business leader highlights the global scope of the alliance, which strengthens not only the flight network but also Spain’s international reputation as a country with a strategic vision for the aviation sector.
