Etsy cracks down on AI slop listings. Everyone else needs to take note.

Platforms tend to shrug off AI clutter until it threatens what they sell. For Etsy, that thing is trust in the maker.

To protect that, Etsy has banned AI-generated how-to guides and listings made entirely by bots. Most sellers must show at least one unretouched photo of the item (via Etsy Seller Handbook).

Why is Etsy drawing this line now?

The reason is simple: shoppers can’t tell what they’re buying anymore. Etsy says many active buyers can’t spot AI-generated visual assets in Etsy listings. That confusion is why they shop there less.

Guides must now include a real finished piece made from the instructions, rather than an AI render. There’s a new rule for listings’ pictures as well. One image must show the real item, shot against an authentic backdrop, with no editing whatsoever (including AI).

Other photos can still use AI polish for lighting, cropping, or backgrounds, so long as the product looks like itself. AI art stays legal if the seller has genuine creative input and is upfront about it.

Digital, custom, and print-on-demand items also get new rules. If a buyer disputes an item that looks materially different (which is what the crackdown is addressing), the seller might have to issue a refund. The platform is also adding a new option to report misleading AI imagery.

Can Etsy enforce this, and who else is watching?

That’s the real question, in my opinion. Etsy says its tools will flag AI-generated images at upload, and bot-made listings could face removal and even shop closure.

Etsy is hardly alone, though. In 2026, AI slop has spread across almost every product and service platform, and sooner or later, they’re all finding ways to crack down on it. Spotify pulled 50 million AI tracks from its recommendations (not deleted them), LinkedIn added a button to report AI content, and Snap keeps fully AI-generated content out of its recommendations.

In my experience, once platforms draw clear lines, the holdouts start looking like dumping grounds. Others should take note. Sellers should audit their listings this week and, as Etsy recommends, disclose AI-touched photos in their descriptions.
