Sigma FP2 is the world’s smallest full-frame camera built for photographers and filmmakers

Full-frame cameras tend to be chunky beasts, but Sigma wants to prove that big imaging doesn’t need a big body. Enter the Sigma FP2, the successor to its tiny, boxy fp mirrorless camera. It keeps the same modular design but packs in some serious upgrades, including a 24.5-megapixel partially stacked full-frame sensor, improved autofocus, 6K video recording, and 70GB of built-in storage. Sigma calls it the world’s smallest full-frame camera, and while it might be tiny, the same cannot be said for its price tag.

Sigma FP2 brings faster shooting and 6K video

The FP2’s 24.5-megapixel partially stacked full-frame sensor is all about speed, rather than joining the megapixel arms race. It can shoot still photos at up to 20 frames per second, with a buffer of up to 200 JPEG frames or 180 RAW frames. Autofocus gets an upgrade, too, with subject recognition for people, animals, and birds. There’s also a 3.15-inch tilting touchscreen that flips up by 90 degrees and down by 45 degrees, making overhead shots and low-angle photography a little less awkward.

Video creators get plenty to play with too. The FP2 records 6K OpenGate video at up to 59.94fps in supported non-RAW formats, using the full sensor area to give editors more room to crop and reframe footage. ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ recording, however, top out at 6K 29.97fps. For 4K video, the camera can shoot at up to 59.94fps using the full sensor, while hitting 119.88fps requires crop mode. In other words, slower footage gets the full sensor treatment, while higher frame rates trade some image area for extra speed.

Connectivity includes a full-size HDMI 2.1 port and two USB-C ports, but don’t mistake them for identical twins. The USB 3.2 port supports high-speed recording to an external SSD, while the USB 2.0 port handles accessories such as the electronic viewfinder. The FP2 also sticks with an electronic shutter, just like the original fp, offering shutter speeds from 1/25,600 second to 30 seconds, plus Bulb mode. The partially stacked sensor reads data faster, helping reduce rolling-shutter distortion that can make fast-moving subjects look a little wonky.

A tiny camera with a modular approach

The FP2 remains impressively compact, measuring approximately 112.8 x 69.9 x 41.8mm. The body weighs around 376 grams without a battery or memory card, rising to roughly 460 grams with both installed. Sigma has also built in 70GB of storage alongside an SD card slot, giving users somewhere to stash footage when a memory card runs out of room. Battery life is rated at around 370 still images or 130 minutes of video, which Sigma says is about 30% better than the original fp.

Sigma FP2 body and viewfinder

The FP2 starts at $2,199 in the US for the body alone. Sigma also offers a kit with the EVF-21 electronic viewfinder for $2,749. The optional viewfinder packs a 5.76-million-dot OLED panel, but it adds both cost and bulk to a camera whose biggest selling point is being small. Buyers interested in Sigma’s 50mm F2 DG Contemporary lens should check the specific kit pricing, rather than assume it’s included with the viewfinder bundle.

The FP2’s pitch is pretty straightforward: full-frame image quality and serious video features without hauling around a traditional camera body. At $2,199, it’s certainly not a casual impulse buy. But for photographers and filmmakers who want a compact setup they can build around their needs, Sigma’s little box is shaping up to be a rather serious piece of kit.
