Apple‘s latest wave of beta software recently went live for developers, bringing several new features across Safari, iOS, and watchOS. Along with these changes, the company also announced something far more significant for third-party developers: it is finally letting them use Siri AI more deeply, opening up capabilities previously limited to a narrow set of supported actions. The company released a new developer preview that lets apps handle more complex requests, including booking restaurant reservations, checking deliveries, and placing orders. All by simply asking Siri.
Devs can now teach Siri to handle complex tasks
According to Apple, developers can now use the App Intents framework to tap into Siri AI’s understanding of personal context, onscreen information, and natural language. The earlier system had limitations around predefined app categories. Now, developers can build their own custom actions.
Then you have something called skills. Essentially, it lets developers teach Siri how to perform several actions as part of one request, instead of having users issue separate commands for every step. Let’s say you found a pair of sneakers in a shopping app and want to share them with a friend. Siri could locate the product, figure out who you are referring to, and send it through Messages. Apple is also expanding Siri’s access to Spotlight’s semantic index, allowing it to find app content that previously didn’t fit supported categories.
Siri’s expanded abilities are still a work in progress
The latest iOS 27.3 beta already offers a glimpse of these abilities. Siri AI can now organize Safari tabs, find previously visited places, and archive old files across 15 Apple apps.
Google is also making similar progress with Gemini. Its Connected Apps Platform and Android AppFunctions give developers ways to integrate their services and custom actions with Google’s AI assistant.
As far as availability goes, Apple’s expanded third-party integrations are currently limited to developer testing. The company expects the first experiences to reach customers in a few months, while App Store submissions are scheduled for spring 2027.
