A Journey of Healing and Hope at NMC ProVita

Ayesha, a 51-year-old Emirati national, began her medical journey on August 12, 2024, shortly after returning from a family vacation abroad. She initially presented to NMC Royal Hospital, Khalifa City, with symptoms of diarrhoea, which rapidly progressed to neurological complications. Soon after, she developed rapidly advancing ascending quadriparesis, and further diagnostic evaluations confirmed a diagnosis of infectious Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Although her vital signs were stable at first, Ayesha’s condition deteriorated rapidly. She experienced increasing respiratory distress and significant weakness in all four limbs, eventually requiring transfer to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced medical care.

Recognising the need for specialised, long- rehabilitation, Ayesha was transferred on August 20, 2024, to NMC ProVita in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi – widely known for its leading expertise in post-acute care, long term care and neuro-rehabilitation services.

At the time of admission, Ayesha had limited trunk control and no hip control and was fully dependent on caregivers for all daily activities including mobility, and transfers. Her upper limb strength was severely compromised, with muscle power severely limited, leaving her hands non-functional. Her lower limbs were also extremely weak, accompanied by marked muscle atrophy in her hands and forearms.

At NMC ProVita, Ayesha received a tailored, multidisciplinary treatment plan delivered by a highly skilled team of physiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, and speech-language pathologists. The team worked collaboratively to not only restore Ayesha’s physical strength but also to support her mental and emotional wellbeing.

Therapies were supported by state-of-the-art rehabilitation technology, including robotic-assisted movement, neuromuscular re-education, and sensory integration tools. Through these advanced modalities, ProVita was able to accelerate Ayesha’s recovery and restore key functional abilities.

NMC ProVita worked closely with Ayesha, delivering advanced physical and occupational therapy using cutting-edge technology and equipment tailored for individuals with neurological impairments and severe physical disabilities. The team ensured Ayesha fully understood her treatment plan, empowering her at every stage of her recovery. Each small milestone inspired her to push further, and her resilience was truly remarkable.

Despite these profound challenges, Ayesha approached her recovery with unwavering positivity and determination. She participated actively in every therapy session, stayed motivated, and pushed through even when simple activities left her fatigued. What was truly remarkable was her consistent optimism where she never once showed frustration, even in the most difficult moments.

Gradually and under the structured care of ProVita’s integrated rehab team, Ayesha made remarkable progress. She began regaining control of her limbs, performing basic self-care tasks and eventually walking unaided. Alongside her therapy, she also engaged in meaningful activities like cooking, which she thoroughly enjoyed, as well as community outings and home visits that played a crucial role in rebuilding her confidence and social connections.

A key differentiator of NMC ProVita is its family-inclusive model of care. Ayesha’s loved ones were educated and involved throughout the process, ensuring a smooth transition from clinical care to home life. The seamless coordination between physicians, therapists, and families created an empowering environment for recovery.

During her stay, Ayesha became a pillar of strength and encouragement for other patients and families, openly sharing her journey and inspiring hope in those around her. She later returned to visit us at ProVita—radiant, joyful, and almost unrecognizable from the person who first arrived. It was a heartwarming reminder of how far she had come.

Today, Ayesha is back home, living with her family and embracing life with renewed energy and positivity.

Her journey is a testament to what can be achieved through teamwork, perseverance, and the will to heal. It is not only a story of individual resilience, but also a reflection of the unmatched care, commitment, and clinical excellence at NMC ProVita, where medical innovation and human empathy come together under one roof.
