The party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, considered the front-runner to win upcoming general elections, launched its campaign for the February 8 polls on Monday. Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz, who is also considered his political heir, started the party’s campaign at a rally in the eastern city of Okara in Punjab province. “The more you vote for us the more you will see your household expenses going down,” she said amid inflation that has been hovering around 30% in recent months. Sharif, who returned from self-exile in London late last year, has pledged to rebuild the country’s $350…
The world could have its first trillionaire within a decade, anti-poverty organisation Oxfam International said on Monday in its annual assessment of global inequalities timed to the gathering of political and business elites at the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Oxfam, which for years has been trying to highlight the growing disparities between the super-rich and the bulk of the global population during the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, reckons the gap has been “supercharged” since the coronavirus pandemic. The group said the fortunes of the five richest men — Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault and his family of…
Naomi Osaka said she had no regrets and had done “the best that I could possibly do” after her Grand Slam comeback came to an abrupt halt at the Australian Open on Monday. A single break proved enough for French 16th seed Caroline Gracia to win the opening set against her rusty opponent before dominating a second set tie-break to win 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) in the first round. Japanese star Osaka, who has won four Grand Slams, stepped away from tennis in September 2022, citing mental health concerns. After giving birth to a baby girl, Shai, in July, she decided…
Microsoft is expanding its AI integration again, enabling anyone to subscribe to a new service called Copilot Pro, which will be used in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. That means you can do things like generate full slideshows in Powerpoint with just a few words typed into the chatbot. Having generative AI built right into Office apps was an exciting idea when it was announced last year, but so far, it’s only available for enterprise accounts as part of Copilot in Microsoft 365. Now, that option is available for all Microsoft 365 and Office customers, but it won’t be free.…
From carrying camera crews across the wilderness to serving the armies as an ambulance, the Land Rover Defender has done it all. The Series 1, first put into production in 1948, often recognised as the WWII Willys Jeep equivalent, was just a box on wheels with aluminium sheet metal draped over it. But it was a truly utilitarian one. Consequent generations shared that iconic brick-like silhouette, and even as more conveniences were added, the Defender remained as tough as nails. Finally, after 67 years and over two million Defenders later, Land Rover called off the production in 2016. The nameplate…

Daubed in red paint on a fallen wall, the names Omar, Abdullah and Massa mark the spot where the three children were buried alive by an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip in November, their relatives say. Mohammad Abu Aweidah, an uncle of the missing children, said he visits the rubble of the home in Rafah every day in the “hope one can pull out their bodies, or take a last look at their remains”. “We pray to God that we will be able to pull them out and see them,” said Abu Aweidah. They were among 16 children…
