Uefa and Fifa contravened EU law by preventing the formation of a Super League, the European Court of Justice said on Thursday, but though breakaway organisers welcomed the landmark ruling, major leagues and clubs moved quickly to support the status quo. The decision stirred up the arguments that swirled around the original Super League plan in 2021 as the ECJ has ruled against the principle of the governing bodies restricting a new league, but crucially added that the judgement did not necessarily mean such a league must be approved. The 12 leading European clubs that proposed forming the breakaway league…

Guardiola’s men are strong favourites to win a fifth trophy in 2023 against Brazil’s Fluminense in Jeddah. No European side has lost in the Club World Cup in 21 games since…

With PlayStation 4 and a little finagling, you’re still able to gameshare with friends and family, potentially…
Once upon a time, just when I was on the brink of discovering English, maybe in or before grade four, I used to see two regular columns in the English newspaper that dad borrowed from a neighbourhood teacher: Obituary and Matrimony. Both carried photos of, in a broader sense, the newsmakers. This happened long before dad settled down back in India and unveiled a brown hardback in the same dramatics as we unpack the latest iPhone. He called it a dictionary and spelled it out phonetically. But Obituary and Matrimony had become familiar to me even before the book release…

The ripple effects of the war in Gaza are likely to knock Lebanon’s fragile economy, which had begun making a tepid recovery after years of crisis, back into recession, the World Bank said in a report released on Thursday. Before the outbreak of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the World Bank had projected that Lebanon’s economy would grow in 2023, by a meager 0.2 per cent, for the first time since 2018, driven largely by remittances sent from Lebanese working abroad and by an uptick in tourism. However, since the war in Gaza began, there have been near-daily clashes between the…
