A turtle-tracking project that uses drones and artificial intelligence, a novel electromagnetic desalination concept, and a plan to produce sustainable concrete from brine water-derived minerals are among 17 climate-related solutions awarded grants and support as part of the Expo Live University Innovation Programme (UIP). Student teams from UAE-based universities presented their ideas to an expert evaluation committee at a live-pitching event, held on Sunday at Expo City Dubai’s Terra Auditorium, on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit. The 17 selected projects will each receive a grant of Dh25,000 to help turn their idea into reality. The third cycle of…
A recent killing spree in the Mexican border city of Tijuana could have been lifted from a TV script: enraged drug lords hunting down corrupt police officers who stole a drug shipment. Two of the officers suspected of the theft have been killed, prosecutors say. But so have at least three other officers, according to the city’s former police chief, suggesting the cartel believed to have owned the drugs may have launched a generalized retribution. It is the latest blow for Tijuana which has the most homicides of any city in Mexico, with about double the number of the place…
Azan Awais’s unbeaten ton and Mohammad Zeeshan’s four-wicket haul inflicted an eight-wicket defeat on the India U-19 team in the fifth match of the Asian Cricket Council Under-19s Asia Cup in Dubai on Sunday. In another match, Afghanistan (261 all out) beat Nepal (188 all out) by 73 runs. In the big clash, Azan’s breathtaking display with the bat broke the back of Indian bowling unit during the chase of 260. Apart from Murugan Abhishek’s two wickets, the rest of the bowlers toiled hard but ended the day without a single wicket in their kitty. After producing a clinical display…
I’m not mad, just disappointed. Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti has aged like milk, and it just released in May. The card was disappointing when it first released, hamstrung by a memory interface that held it back in games released this year. But it has grown even more stale over the course of the year as some of the best graphics cards, both from the last generation and the current one, have fallen in price. As with any graphics card, you can’t look at it in a vacuum. The RTX 4060 Ti is the most disappointing GPU I’ve reviewed this year,…

Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, on Sunday said that Israel was implementing a policy of pushing Palestinians out of Gaza through a war that he said meets the “legal definition of genocide”. Safadi, whose country borders the West Bank and absorbed the bulk of Palestinians after the creation of Israel in 1948, also said that Israel had created hatred that would haunt the region and define generations to come. “What we are seeing in Gaza is not just simply the killing of innocent people and the destruction of their livelihoods (by Israel) but a systematic effort to empty Gaza of…

In psychology, there is something called “affective ambivalence,” where two opposite emotions are experienced almost at the same time. It perfectly sums up the rollercoaster of feelings I’ve had for the Motorola Razr Plus since returning to it. One moment I absolutely love it, but then it deeply frustrates me due to something silly or something Motorola should have fixed by now. But then I check how much it costs, and I go right back to being astonished by it. Yes, my time with the Motorola Razr Plus has been emotional. Here’s why. Emotional rollercoaster painted red The Motorola Razr…
The UAE will establish an electric vehicle charging stations company, it was announced on Sunday. This came as the UAE Cabinet met at Expo City Dubai, in conjunction with COP28. The company will oversee development of infrastructure to charge electric vehicles, the day-to-day operations of charging stations and develop a pricing strategy for charging services. The UAE earlier this year approved a national policy on electric vehicles to build a national network of electric vehicle chargers that supports the needs of owners of electric vehicles and regulates its market in the UAE. The policy will contribute in reducing energy consumption…
