You may be a native Na’vi in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, but having been raised by the Resources Development Administration (RDA), your character is as new to the alien world od Pandora as any human would be. That, of course, means you’ll be starting from scratch to build up your skills and abilities to not only survive the natural flora and fauna, but also fight back against the invading RDA forces. Skill points are not as easy to come by in this game as others, and after the first one or two skills in a tree, they become quite expensive…

Israeli forces struck the southern Gaza town of Rafah twice overnight, residents said Thursday, sowing fear in one of the last places where civilians could seek refuge after Israel widened its offensive against Hamas to areas already packed with displaced people. UN officials say there are no safe places in Gaza. Heavy fighting in and around the southern city of Khan Younis has displaced tens of thousands of people in a territory where over 80 per cent of the population has already fled their homes, and cut most of Gaza off from deliveries of food, water and other vital aid.…

It’s a given that for most humans on the planet, the mum is the best cook. Except in some families who keep the debate on a simmer for reason unbeknownst to anyone, like mine where children would bring it to a boil at dinner time with pointed comments like, “But mum can never stand up to dad’s signature butter chicken”. Dishes would not be washed that night, and breakfast would be delayed. Such modern mise en scène in the long play called life was unthinkable back in the day because I grew up at the fag end of patriarchy when…

This year has been full of some pretty excellent and innovative tech products, and that includes audio/video and home theater gear — from blisteringly bright TVs to headphones with Wi-Fi and earbud charging cases with LED screens to new-and-improved products from all the big shots like Apple, Sony, Amazon, and more. But I’m here for the weird stuff. The interesting stuff. The stuff that made our eyes widen and our eyebrows do funny things. And throughout 2023, there have been a few good ones, including a fire-breathing $3,900 surround sound setup, a turntable you might want to eat with a…
The UAE will set up specialised courts to handle bankruptcy cases as the government seeks to overhaul the restructuring and insolvency legal framework, streamlining the process to enhance investor trust further. A federal law on financial restructuring and bankruptcy was published in the UAE Gazette on October 31 and will come into effect from May 1, 2024, according to legal experts. Currently, a dedicated section of the Courts is led by a Court of Appeal judge responsible for overseeing bankruptcy and restructuring matters. The new law protects and streamlines the process and avoids separate enforcement proceedings for creditors. “The court…
“The grass is always greener on the other side” (of your mind) is an understatement when it comes to picking a retirement home. Typically, a non-resident Indian would proudly restitch his umbilical code and make a dash home to build what would not only be the envy of his neighbours but would put the seven wonders of the world to shame. For most of them, the dream to build a museum of nostalgia back home and a little heaven on a yonder shore is the holy grail. In my case, life has never been so eventful. I had forgotten to…

Earlier this week it was the annual golf match between Team India and Team Pakistan that caught everyone’s attention when the teams took on each other at the prestigious Emirates Golf Club for the Friendship Cup. Team Pakistan claimed the honours, and bragging rights, when they posted a strong victory in this fourth edition of the…
