Britain’s opposition leader Keir Starmer was in his element as he rubbed shoulders with world leaders at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, almost as if in rehearsal for the role of prime minister he hopes will soon be his. During a two-day visit to the Gulf, the Labour Party leader held meetings on climate change and the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza with leaders including the Emir of Qatar, the King of Jordan and the president of Brazil. He had chats with US climate envoy John Kerry and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Attending a roundtable of investors with more…
The UAE’s banking and financial sector will mobilise more than Dh1 trillion ($272.5 billion) in sustainable finance by 2030, senior officials said at the 28th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai on Monday. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE, said the banking sector, will need to contribute to both the UAE’s medium-term economic plans and the Strategy for Net Zero by 2050. “Critically, this requires financing the transition and climate adaption strategies of corporate customers, which includes carbon-intensive sectors, but also allocating new funds to green projects,” he said. Balama…

That the modern woman is breaking glass ceilings is a cliché. Now women of substance write their own life scripts and screenplays. They create their own marquees to set their stories in and walk the red carpet with a peahen’s grace. Nayla Al Khaja, the first Emirati female filmmaker exemplifies the new-age woman who has found her voice and uses the larger canvas to tell stories close to her heart. On the eve of the premiere of her first feature-length film, Three, at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, she divulges why the thriller genre intrigues her, where she…
Transforming food systems is a powerful way to reduce global dependency on fossil fuels By Anna Lappé and Patty Fong When political leaders, policymakers, environmental advocates, and philanthropists gather for this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai (COP28), food systems will be high on the agenda for the first time. Given that the food sector accounts for one-third of all greenhouse-gas emissions, its inclusion is long overdue. Fortunately, this challenge need not compete for our attention, because transforming food systems is also a powerful way to reduce our global dependency on fossil fuels. As our organisation shows in…
With buildings representing some 40 per cent of global emissions , decarbonising the built environment is one of the fastest paths to meeting net zero targets globally, and essential for many businesses with 2030 carbon reduction goals, a study by Johnson Controls has shown. “For leaders looking to quickly advance their net zero journey and make a real impact on global carbon reduction, buildings are the key enabler,” said Johnson Controls chairman and CEO George Oliver. “Our whole approach is not only the electrification of the equipment, but then also deploying that with digital capabilities, the use of data, that…
Usman Khawaja jumped to the defence of his opening partner David Warner on Monday after stinging criticism of the veteran batsman from Australian great Mitchell Johnson. Former fast bowler Johnson hit out after Warner kept his spot in Australia’s squad to face Pakistan in the first Test later this month despite a poor run of red-ball form. The three-match home series against Pakistan is expected to be Warner’s farewell to Test cricket. The decision to keep faith with Warner provoked a strong response from Johnson, who questioned why his former team-mate should be given a “hero’s send-off” in light of…
