A tenuous truce has just ended, resuming the orgy of death and destruction in one part of the world. Closer home, the world has converged to discuss what needs to be done to save the planet from an impending inferno. Given the serious subjects that are currently making the headlines, I should be ideally speaking of grave things that matter. But then again, there are well-versed people to address the weighty issues and brainstorm for plausible solutions. In my domain are the small things that have big consequences in the lives of the common man. They have their own diurnal…
Planet Electric, an Indian start-up focusing on commercial electric vehicle (EV) mobility, expects to launch India’s first electric cargo vehicle using material engineering innovations in June 2024, and the Middle East is the first market it hopes to export its products to. Globally, 20 per cent of the ICE cargo fleet (last mile and short haul majority, all LCVs) is expected to be completely electrified by 2030, Gagan Agrawal, co-founder of Planet Electric, told Khaleej Times in an interview. “For India, APAC and MEA, it’s a game changer on economics if the tech is built right,” he added. The company…
America’s bestselling plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has another battery recall on the books. Jeep just posted recall “B9A” (aka National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall 23V-787) for the Wrangler 4xe, and it’s a doozy: the recall focuses on potential fire risk with the 4xe’s 17.3kWh battery, and until it’s fixed, owners are encouraged to stop charging their car and to park it outside away from other vehicles: “An internally failed HV battery could lead to a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off. A vehicle fire can result in increased risk of occupant injury and/or injury to persons outside the…
A woman has been sentenced to two months imprisonment and fined Dh3,000 for assaulting a man in a residential building and scratching his face with her hand. The Fujairah Federal Court issued the judgement and stated that the man could not perform his work for over 20 days due to sustained injuries. The victim lodged a complaint, claiming that the woman attacked him as he entered his residential building, raising her voice and hurling insults without provocation. In response, he threatened to report her to the police. She then physically assaulted him, prompting him to file a police report, Arabic…
Patients lie on cold, bloodstained floors in hospitals filled to overflowing. Some scream in pain, but others lie silently, deathly white, too weak even to cry out. Hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip have descended into chaos since the resumption of the war between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel. After eight weeks of war, interrupted only by one seven-day pause that ended on Friday, the doctors are exhausted. Fuel reserves have almost run dry because of Israel’s blockade of the territory, so doctors are forced to choose when and where across their hospitals to run generators. According to…
India’s Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century and fast bowlers Mukesh Kumar and Arshdeep Singh took a combined five wickets as the home side beat Australia by six runs in the final Twenty20 International to deny the visitors a consolation win on Sunday. Australia, chasing 160 in Bangalore, looked on course for victory as Ben McDermott hit a knock of 54 but the chase was derailed when the 28-year-old tried to hammer Arshdeep (2-40) for six and ended up holing out to long-off. Once McDermott departed, Kumar (3-32) struck twice in quick succession to leave Australia reeling on 129-7 before Arshdeep…
“That’s just too dim.” It’s the same feedback I always get when reviewing OLED gaming monitors, which have made waves throughout this year. The criticism puts a damper on the otherwise jaw-dropping color and perfect contrast. The brightness measurements certainly seem to affirm that suspicion, showing they sometimes provide more than half as much brightness of a traditional LCD display. But are they really too dim? To better understand how OLED differs, I talked with Jacky Qiu, vice president and co-founder of OTI Lumionics. OTI doesn’t make panels, but its research of the technology is critical to how OLED is…
Prototypes for Humanity 2023, an initiative featuring 100 pioneering inventions aimed at addressing environmental and social challenges, concluded on Sunday at COP28 with the announcement of the winners of its $100,000 prize. The Prototypes…
Their call was loud and clear: Ceasefire now! But they were also not able to help but sob and quiver as, one by one, the names of those who tragically died in Gaza were called in a poignant protest calling for justice and respect for humanity. Wearing keffiyehs and waving watermelon banners, more than 200 environmental activists staged an organised demonstration at the ongoing COP28 in Dubai on Sunday, calling for an ‘unconditional and immediate ceasefire in Gaza’ as the number of deaths continues to rise following the expiration of a temporary truce. The protest held inside the UN-controlled Blue…
Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski headed a dramatic late equaliser in a six-goal thriller at Manchester City on Sunday after Liverpool staged a sensational comeback on a breathless afternoon in the Premier League. High-flying Aston Villa scored in the 90th minute to draw 2-2 at Bournemouth while 10-man Chelsea shrugged off a red card for captain Conor Gallagher to edge Brighton 3-2 on a day when 24 goals were scored in five matches. Pep Guardiola’s champions led 2-1 at the break thanks to a Phil Foden goal after Spurs captain Son Heung-min had scored at both ends, but Giovani Lo Celso’s superb…
