Even if you dig deep into the archives, you would fail to find another cricket team that had dominated a World Cup like India and yet ended up empty handed. To draw an analogy, you have to look beyond cricket and set foot in the world of Ferenc Puskas and Johan Cruyff. There was the Hungarian football team with Puskas, the legendary Real Madrid striker, as the fulcrum, decimating every opponent with their dazzling football at the 1954 World Cup only to lose the title-decider to West Germany, the team they had thrashed 8-3 in the group stages. Twenty years…

Gaza’s Hamas government said Sunday the death toll from fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants in the Palestinian territory had reached 13,000 since war began on October 7. The Hamas government said more than 5,500 children were among the dead, alongside 3,500 women, with 30,000 more people wounded. Its health ministry has previously said it can no longer give exact tolls as intense fighting has prevented bodies from being recovered.
The rift that cost artificial-intelligence whiz kid Sam Altman his CEO job at OpenAI reflects a fundamental difference of opinion over safety, broadly, between two camps developing the world-altering software and pondering its societal impact. On one side are those, like Altman, who view the rapid development and, especially, public deployment of AI as essential to stress-testing and perfecting the technology. On the other side are those who say the safest path forward is to fully develop and test AI in a laboratory first to ensure it is, so to speak, safe for human consumption. Altman, 38, was fired on…
The Pakistan Cricket Board appointed former international players Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal as bowling coaches for the national team on Tuesday. Gul will be the fast bowling coach while Ajmal will handle the spin bowlers. Both will accompany the team to Australia for three test matches which will be followed by five Twenty20s in New Zealand. Gul was coach during Pakistan’s white-ball series against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates and against New Zealand at home earlier this year. He has also coached Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League last season and was coach of the Afghanistan team…
It’s that time of year again, Black Friday deals. Supposedly the time of year when companies “go in the black” for profits, it can certainly be a time when a thrifty consumer can feel the power of the deal. And this ethos of the deal is especially powerful for those of us interested in technical gadgets and big ticket items. Big percentage numbers and low dollar numbers are around every corner, to entice our eyes and wallets. With so many savings to choose from, a new problem arises. Not one of the lack of funds, necessarily, but an abundance of…

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said the project is now 85 per cent complete. The project extends from Al Khail Street intersection to the Cyclists Club. Arab and Muslim ministers called on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as their delegation visited Beijing on the first leg of a tour to push for an end to hostilities and to allow humanitarian aid into the devastated Palestinian enclave. The delegation, which is set to meet officials representing each of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, is also piling pressure on the West to reject Israel’s justification of its actions against Palestinians as self-defence. The officials holding meetings with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Monday are from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Indonesia, Palestine…
