Dr. Sahar Hashmi Conducts Workshop on the Role of AI in Research and Patient Management at Mass General Brigham (MGB) – Harvard Medical School Affiliated Hospitals
Dr. Sahar Hashmi, an MD-PhD and the 2024 award-winning AI Expert Business Advisor of the Year, wears multiple hats. In addition to being an expert in generative AI applications and their uses, she is also a data scientist, digital design specialist, and a trusted advisor to AI startups and venture capitalists (VCs).
Dr. Sahar Hashmi conducted a customized workshop on “The Role of AI in Research and Patient Management” for a group of physicians in leadership roles, staff members, scientists, and fellows at Mass General Brigham (MGB). The workshop covered a range of topics, starting with a foundational understanding of AI and its applications in healthcare. Dr. Hashmi then explored various use cases, detailing how AI can be applied in research and patient management within hospitals and clinics.
She emphasized the critical role of data quality and study design in achieving reliable research outcomes. “Once you’ve identified a problem, the next key step is obtaining the right form of data and understanding how AI can be used to analyze it,” she explained. “It’s equally important to use the correct Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure outcomes. Too often, flawed studies are published in renowned medical journals, and conclusions are drawn based on limited data or faulty KPIs and lack of proper evidence.”
Dr. Sahar Hashmi also discussed the rapid advancements in technology, particularly since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, highlighting how new updates are emerging every two to three months. She pointed to recent developments such as Microsoft’s “Copilot” and the increasing competition from ChatGPT alternatives like Gemini and Claude, which are making significant waves in the AI landscape. Dr. Sahar Hashmi addressed the challenges of staying current in this fast-evolving field and stressed the importance of carefully selecting AI vendors to navigate these technological shifts.
The workshop concluded with a customized case study that explored the practical application of AI in research and patient management. This session encouraged participants to reflect on the discussions surrounding generative AI. The workshop at the Harvard Medical School affiliated hospital was a great success, with one key takeaway resonating across the board: the trust and security of AI applications are critical in healthcare. It was implied in the discussions that a single failed AI application could quickly erode trust, making it challenging for future iterations of AI solutions to regain credibility.
Participants in her ongoing workshops have remarked, “This was one of the best workshops I’ve ever attended—precise, insightful, and thoroughly up-to-date.” Another participant shared, “Dr. Sahar Hashmi’s extensive expertise in AI, combined with her diverse skill sets, is a rare combination. This is why her workshop was so insightful and valuable to all of us, regardless of our field. We learned so much today and felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend.”
