Google Photos just made it easier to edit multi-clip videos and create highlight reels

Google Photos is getting a major refresh for video editing on Android and iOS, with an improved editing interface and new tools to help users easily create highlight reels, add soundtracks, and custom text. Google says the updated video editor is faster and easier to use, featuring a universal timeline that lets users work on multiple clips.

The editor also gives users quick access to editing tools in a carousel toolbar underneath the timeline, letting them crop clips, add filters, adjust the audio and playback speed, and add text overlays. Google has also tweaked the interface in line with Android’s Material 3 Expressive design language, giving the editor a cleaner, more modern look.

The redesigned video editor in Google Photos is now better than ever 🎬:

Beyond manual editing improvements, Google has introduced new templates to the Photos app, which make it easier for users to create highlight videos with multiple photos and video clips. These templates feature pre-set formats with built-in music, text, and cuts synced to the soundtrack, and users just need to select photos or clips to create shareable videos. Users can try these templates by heading to the Create tab and selecting the new highlight video option.

Google Photos’ video editor now also includes a music library that lets users easily add soundtracks to their highlight videos and the ability to add custom text overlays. In its announcement post, Google says the redesigned video editor will serve as the default video editing tool on Android, which should eliminate the need to download third-party video editing apps for many users.

The redesigned editor is rolling out on both Android and iOS, and should reach all users in the coming days. The highlight videos feature and custom text overlays are currently only rolling out for Google Photos on Android, and Google has yet to share when these features will reach iPhone users.
