Meta promises it’ll soon be easier to recover your hacked Instagram account

What’s happened? Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has launched a new unified support hub on its Android and iOS apps.

  • In the hub, users can report issues, recover accounts, and get help with security settings (via Meta).
  • In addition, the hub will provide an AI-powered search or assistant to guide them on their concerns.
  • The global rollout of the unified support hub is part of a broader redesign to improve account support.

Why is this important? In its press release, Meta writes that AI- and behavior-based security tools have helped the platform reduce new account hacks by over 30%.

  • For years, users have struggled with Meta’s customer support, especially after hacks or lockouts.
  • They’ve complained about how the platform’s support is slow and confusing.
  • However, the new hub centralizes everything, reducing friction and making recovery easier.
  • Meta’s claim that fewer new accounts are being hacked and that the recovery rate for hacked accounts is higher suggests that the latest security protocols are working.

Why should I care? If you’ve ever lost access to your Instagram or Facebook account or worried about getting hacked, the new support hub could help you regain access to your account faster. For creators, small businesses, or anyone using Instagram or Facebook for professional purposes, less risk of downtime means a more seamless experience for their audience. For everyday users, better security and easier recovery will reduce stress, especially due to the non-responsive nature of customer support.

OK, what’s next? Initially, the new security hub is being tested on Facebook. Eventually, it will roll out to other platforms like Instagram and possibly WhatsApp. As more users adopt the new support hub, Meta will gather feedback to refine it. This move could pressure other social media platforms to upgrade their support systems.
