  • Specialists at the symposium shared advances in minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques that are significantly reducing pain, recovery time, and long-term disability in orthopaedic brain and spine surgery.
  • Hosted by Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital at Sky View Downtown Dubai, the symposium is a continuing medical education forum bringing together regional and international specialists on the latest developments in orthopaedics and neuro-spine surgery

Dubai – February 13, 2026: Experts have highlighted a key shift in major ortho, brain and spine surgery, driven by advances in minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques that are dramatically reducing pain, hospital stays, and long-term disability, according to specialists speaking at the latest edition of the Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Symposium. Doctors noted that procedures once associated with prolonged recovery and significant risk are now increasingly focused on preserving function, shortening rehabilitation, and helping patients return to normal life sooner.

The annual symposium, hosted by Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital in Dubai, is a continuing medical education forum that brings together local and regional specialists to share clinical experiences, research findings, and case studies across orthopaedics neuro & spine surgery. Designed as a platform for knowledge exchange, the symposium focuses on conditions that directly impact mobility, independence, and long-term quality of life, setting the stage for in-depth discussions on how evolving surgical techniques are reshaping outcomes for patients across the region.

Dr. Shanila Laiju, Group CEO of Medcare Hospitals, said, “The 10th edition of Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Symposium is an important platform for generating dialogue around how innovation is reshaping patient care. By bringing together experts across orthopaedics and neurosurgery, the symposium focuses on translating surgical advancements into tangible improvements in safety, recovery, and quality of life for patients, while also ensuring clinicians remain aligned with global best practices.”

On the topic of Orthopaedics surgical care, Dr. Azzam Fayyad, Medical Director at Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital and Chairperson of the Symposium has stated.

“As one of the only hospitals in Dubai specializing in Orthopaedic Surgery, at Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital we perform thousands of orthopaedic surgeries every year. We cover the entire spectrum of ortho subspecialities and furthermore have sub specialized doctors in every area, from joint replacement to arm and hand reconstruction and microsurgery experts to speciality in ankle and foot surgery we possess expertise in each of these subspecialized areas. It is not just the technology that makes a huge difference, having all these subspecialized experts under one roof ensures collaborative care as well as the best expertise and surgical experience you can receive.”

“In neurosurgery the leap in technology has been significant allowing surgeons to have better precision with less complications and much faster recovery times. At Medcare Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital we use the latest Robotic and AI powered brain and spine navigation systems to ensure the utmost accuracy and precision when carrying out such complex and delicate surgeries. The smallest miss can have tremendous complications for the patients. So we always ensure that we are at the forefront of International Medical practices and embrace the highest level of technology for the benefit of our patients. “ said Dr. Thaer Darwish, Head of Neuro & Spine Surgery, & Chairperson of the Symposium. “Minimally invasive surgery especially for brain and spine have been around for a while however we are taking in to the next level ensuring a much wider integration of smart technologies that outperform outcomes or conventional minimally invasive surgeries” Dr Thaer further added.

“Improved visualisation, refined instruments, and real-time monitoring now allow surgeons to remove tumours with far greater precision while protecting healthy brain tissue. Modern microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques have significantly reduced post-operative pain and recovery time for brain tumour patients. When combined with early diagnosis, these advancements help preserve neurological function and independence, allowing patients to return to their daily lives much sooner than was possible with traditional open surgery,” Dr. Gopalakrishnan Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon at Medcare Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital has added.

Dr. Thaer Darwish, Consultant Spine Surgeon, also shared insights on complex and revision spine surgeries, “Advances in imaging, planning, and surgical techniques are helping surgeons safely address cases once considered extremely high-risk. Revision surgeries, often complicated by scar tissue and altered anatomy, now benefit from more precise approaches that reduce complications and improve long-term outcomes, offering renewed hope to patients living with persistent pain after previous procedures.”

In addition, the programme also featured other regional specialists who shared insights across a wide range of orthopaedic and spine-related topics. The event was chaired by Dr. Azzam Fayyad, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, alongside Dr. Thaer Darwish, Consultant Spine Surgeon.

Scientific sessions included Dr. Usama Hassan Saleh, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon; Dr. Saher Arour, Consultant Vascular Surgeon; Dr. Massimo Piracci, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon; Dr. Anand Gorva, Specialist Orthopaedics Surgery; Dr. Ahmed Doheim, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgery; and Dr. Maan Taba, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. Additional spine-focused sessions were delivered by Dr. Marc Sinclair, Consultant Orthopaedics and Spine Surgeon; Dr. Sameh Abolfotouh Dr. Nikola Vagic, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgery; Dr. Mohamad Awad, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, and Dr. Mohammed Ghanem, Specialist Orthopaedics.

These sessions explored a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from innovations in shoulder and joint repair, artificial ligaments, and minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery to complex spine conditions such as scoliosis, degenerative deformities, and revision spine surgeries. Speakers also addressed emerging approaches in brain tumour surgery, highlighting how microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques are reducing recovery times and improving long-term function. According to presenters, these discussions are especially relevant in the region due to the rising life expectancy, increased rates of posture-related spine problems, and growing awareness of the need for earlier, less invasive intervention.

According to speakers, modern techniques are not only expanding what is surgically possible but are also helping to address long-standing patient fears around pain, disability, and prolonged recovery.
