Samsung’s Galaxy S28 series could be the first to feature an in-house GPU

Samsung is betting big on its in-house Exynos SoCs, with reports suggesting that the upcoming Galaxy S26 series will feature the recently released Exynos 2600 chipset. Built on a 2nm manufacturing process, the chip promises notable performance and efficiency gains thanks to a redesigned 10-core CPU, a new Xclipse 960 GPU, and an upgraded built-in NPU. But Samsung appears to have even bigger upgrades planned for future Exynos SoCs.

According to a fresh report from Hankyung (via Android Authority), Samsung has developed its own GPU architecture and could debut it with the Exynos 2800 in 2027. This means the Galaxy S28 series could be the first lineup to feature a custom Samsung GPU.

Over the last few years, the company has relied on AMD’s architecture for the GPUs on recent flagship and mid-range Exynos chips. However, the report suggests that the company isn’t satisfied with licensing AMD’s blueprints.

Samsung reportedly believes a generic GPU design can’t fully support its ambitions around stronger on-device AI performance and tighter software integration. By developing its own GPU architecture, the company could gain finer control over everything from AI workloads to overall efficiency, mirroring the kind of vertical optimization Apple has achieved with its in-house silicon.

Samsung’s custom GPU ambitions could extend beyond smartphones

Interestingly, the report suggests that Samsung doesn’t plan to limit its custom GPU tech to phones. The company could eventually expand it to other products, including smart glasses, infotainment systems for autonomous vehicles, and even humanoid robots.

Samsung has yet to confirm these plans, and the rumored timeline could change, especially given the complexity of developing in-house graphics hardware. But if these plans materialize, Samsung’s shift toward a fully custom GPU could mark a significant evolution for Exynos chips and usher in a new generation of Galaxy devices that offer better graphical performance and improved power efficiency.
