Samsung’s Galaxy Z Trifold packs a unique hinge system and shock-absorbing screen

What’s happened? Samsung just dropped the Galaxy Z TriFold, its first phone with two hinges and a design that opens out into a 10-inch tablet. Samsung describes it as the most advanced hinge and display tech yet, and it’s built to bend twice without feeling fragile or bulky.

  • A dual-rail ‘Armor FlexHinge’ with two hinge sizes works together to manage the uneven weight across the three panels.
  • The triple-fold layout lets the screen panels meet with minimal gap, giving a thinner, pocketable build.
  • The 10-inch main display uses a shock-absorbing layer to handle the strain of double-folding.

This is important because: Samsung is stepping into tri-fold territory where Huawei has been drawing attention with its Mate XT. Huawei’s device folds in a zig-zag pattern where the panels wrap around the outside. Samsung is taking the opposite approach with both outer panels folding inward over the center screen. That keeps the structure tight, avoids gaps between panels, and helps maintain a slim profile when folded.

Getting this right required major hinge engineering. Samsung has refined its Armor FlexHinge into a two-hinge system, each hinge a different size to balance the uneven weight across three folding sections. Both hinges use a dual-rail structure housed in titanium, with a thin metal barrier protecting the mechanism from wear.

Foldables usually face durability concerns, so Samsung added a shock-absorbing layer beneath the main 10-inch panel and topped it with a reinforced coating. The back of the device is built from a ceramic-glass fiber-reinforced polymer, a material that prevents cracks and keeps the device thin.

Why should I care? If you often juggle multiple tasks such as browsing, messaging, editing documents, and watching videos, Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold gives you a big, versatile screen that you can carry around. The improved hinges and shock-absorbing display reduce the usual fragility concerns about foldables, making this a more practical daily driver than many earlier foldable phones.
