Samsung’s latest patent suggests a flip you can fold inward or outward

A Samsung reversible flip phone patent spotted on the World Intellectual Property Organization site hints at a clamshell with no obvious “right” side when it’s shut. Based on the designs spotted by XpertPick, Samsung is exploring a reversible front and back design where either outer face could be the one you see.

That’s a notable shift from today’s flip phones, which usually have a clear split between a cover display side and a plainer rear panel. This filing looks like it’s trying to make the closed phone feel consistent from both sides.

It’s also worth keeping expectations grounded. This is a design patent, so it protects the look and overall form, not a promise that Samsung is about to ship this exact device.

The design filing is all about shape

The report points out that the patent includes multiple perspectives, with front, rear, side, top, and bottom views shown in different folded and unfolded positions. That kind of thorough coverage is often about locking down a visual identity from every angle.

The downside for readers is obvious too. You won’t find details on hardware choices, materials, or performance here, and there’s nothing in the filing that confirms how tough this would be in real-world use.

A reversible exterior with tradeoffs

The clearest takeaway from the figures is that the phone doesn’t seem to have a clearly defined front or back when folded. Both outer panels look similar in size and shape, which supports the idea that either side could face outward.

Some images also show a circular cut-out on an outer surface. The report notes it could be for a camera, a sensor, or another functional element, but the patent doesn’t explain it. Side views suggest a uniform thickness and a clean hinge design, which fits the goal of a consistent feel no matter how you hold it.

What to watch next

If this concept moves beyond aesthetics, the next signal will be follow-up filings that explain mechanics and protection, including how Samsung would keep an outward-facing surface durable over time. Keep in mind that not all patents become a product, and that Samsung has more ideas than it can handle.

If you’re shopping for a foldable soon, don’t delay a purchase based on this alone and check out the best foldables you can buy now. Treat it as a clue that Samsung is still experimenting with what a flip can look like when closed, and watch for anything that adds engineering detail.
