On December 21, Netflix is premiering its biggest sci-fi original movie of 2023: Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. It would be nice if that film represents a shift towards more science fiction films in 2024, but the truth is that sci-fi is a woefully underrepresented genre on Netflix. Subscribers will have a much easier time finding romantic comedies, action films, and thrillers than they will in getting their sci-fi or fantasy movie fix.
This problem continues this month as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong are both exiting Netflix after only a two-month run. As a small consolation, Love and Monsters and Lucy were added to December’s library of the best sci-fi movies on Netflix. Regardless, we still feel that Netflix is underserving science fiction fans, and we want that to change.
