Volkswagen has launched a new sedan in China that may raise a few eyebrows for what it offers – and what it costs. The ID. Era 5S starts at just 89,900 yuan, or around $13,400, yet it combines a plug-in hybrid powertrain with up to 160km of electric-only range.
The car was officially unveiled at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show and is the second sedan in Volkswagen’s China-only ID. Era lineup. Built through the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture, the 5S is aimed squarely at China’s increasingly competitive market for affordable new-energy vehicles.
Volkswagen is chasing China’s budget EV market
Price is arguably the ID. Era 5S’s biggest talking point. At 89,900 yuan, the entry-level model is priced alongside several conventional sedans and domestic EVs, including the BYD Qin Plus and Geely Galaxy Starshine 6, according to CarNewsChina’s pricing comparison.
Under the hood is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine paired with a 130kW electric motor and a 19.1kWh LFP battery supplied by Rept Battero Energy. Volkswagen claims up to 160km of electric range under China’s CLTC testing cycle. The sedan also supports AC and DC charging, with the latter capable of taking the battery from 30% to 80% in about 15 minutes. Vehicle-to-load functionality is also included.
The ID. Era 5S measures 4,836mm long and rides on a 2,766mm wheelbase. Power is sent to the front wheels, while the suspension setup combines MacPherson struts at the front with a multi-link arrangement at the rear.
Volkswagen is also leaning heavily on technology inside. A 15.6-inch infotainment display sits alongside an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, while Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar and CarLink are supported. Higher-end versions add features including heated and ventilated seats, a 16-speaker sound system and navigation-assisted driving functions.
An affordable Volkswagen with plenty to prove
The ID. Era 5S matters because Volkswagen is facing an increasingly difficult challenge in China. Domestic brands have become exceptionally good at producing feature-packed EVs and plug-in hybrids at prices foreign automakers often struggle to match.
The ID. Era 5S looks even more remarkable when placed alongside cars sold in the U.S. At around $13,400, Volkswagen’s new plug-in hybrid costs roughly half as much as many of America’s cheapest mainstream sedans, including the Kia K4, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen’s own Jetta. Move into electrified territory and the gap grows even wider. The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt starts at $28,995, while the 2026 Nissan Leaf starts at $29,990, both costing more than twice as much as the ID. Era 5S. Plug-in hybrids such as the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid also start above $30,000. The comparison is not perfect, given differences in regulations, taxes, manufacturing costs, and market conditions, but it shows just how aggressively China’s car market has pushed electrified vehicle prices down.
A starting price of around $13,400 gives Volkswagen a much stronger answer to that pressure. The car is not a pure EV, either, which could appeal to buyers who want electric driving for short daily trips without worrying about charging infrastructure on longer journeys.
There are five variants of the new model, with prices of 119,900 yuan ($17,680), 129,900 yuan, 139,900 yuan, 144,900 yuan and 149,900 yuan respectively. SAIC Volkswagen is offering incentives on the new model for a limited time, with pricing beginning at 89,900 yuan ($13,260), also available at 99,900 yuan, 109,900 yuan, 114,900 yuan and 119,900 yuan respectively.
Offers include 30,000 yuan off the official list pricing and incentives such as a 1,000-yuan deposit that can be converted to 5,000 yuan off the final payment and trade-in subsidies.
Specifically, the ID. ERA 5S pre-sales started on August 11 with a base pre-sale price of 115,900 yuan. Volkswagen has not announced plans to sell the ID. Era 5S outside China. Its significance, for now, lies in what it represents: a major global automaker trying to compete on the same terms as China’s fast-moving domestic car industry – aggressive pricing, long electric range, and plenty of technology.
