Rivian reaches key milestone for its R2 electric SUV, deliveries are coming soon

Rivian has begun Manufacturing Validation (MV) units of the R2 five-seater electric SUV. The production istaking place at the automaker’s plant in Normal, Illinois, which has been expanded (by another 1.1 million square feet) to accommodate the new assembly lines. This milestone follows the earlier Design Validation (DV) phase, completed in mid-2025.

MV builds are used to test everything from the panel’s fit and finish and paint quality to the electrical systems (including the motors and battery pack) and the software that holds everything together in EVs. They’re near-final vehicles with production-ready specifications.

Finally, Rivian R2 is one step closer to deliveries

Rivian R2’s entry into the MV phase signals that the engineering, software integration, and production methods are largely finalized. The cars produced during this phase are used to test the hardware and software out in the real world, and recalibrate anything that needs work before the model goes on sale.

After navigating production challenges with the R1T and R1S (including quality-control issues, supplier instability, and cost pressure), R2’s transition into the MV indicates that the company has absorbed the initial challenges and has reinforced its credibility.

If you’re a prospective EV buyer looking for an affordable yet well-equipped ride, the Rivian R2 should definitely be on your radar. Now that the vehicle has entered the final stages of development, the automaker is a step closer to first deliveries.

Sharing the update via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, expresses his excitement to “start delivering to customers soon.” Next, the model would undergo regulatory testing, continued validation builds to incorporate any required changes, and gradually move to mass production.

It was back in 2024 that the company first announced the Rivian R2. If all goes well, it could fulfill its promise of shipping the vehicle in the first half of 2026, possibly starting deliveries by the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second quarter.
