UAE Doctors Save Child’s Leg From Amputation Through Advanced Reconstruction Surgery, Al Zahra Hospital, Dubai Restores Mobility for Child Born with Rare Congenital Limb Condition

Dubai – United Arab Emirates

In a remarkable medical achievement reflecting the UAE’s advanced healthcare capabilities, a multidisciplinary team at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai successfully saved the leg of a seven-year-old child who had previously been advised by multiple medical centers to undergo amputation as the only treatment option for a rare and complex congenital condition.

Adam was born with a congenital absence of the tibia bone in his right leg, an extremely rare disorder affecting leg development and ankle stability, causing severe mobility challenges since birth.

The family faced years of emotional distress after repeatedly being told that amputation was the only viable solution, raising serious concerns about their child’s future quality of life.

Dr. Zaid Al Obaidi, Consultant Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and Pediatric Deformity Consultant Doctor at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai,

Following numerous medical consultations, the case was referred to Dr. Zaid Al Obaidi, Consultant Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and Pediatric Deformity Consultant Doctor at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai, who designed an advanced limb preservation and reconstruction treatment plan aimed at saving the child’s leg instead of amputating it.

Dr. Al Obaidi explained that the child underwent a series of highly delicate and complex surgeries, including transferring the fibula bone to function as the missing tibia, in addition to reconstructing and stabilizing the ankle joint, which had not naturally formed at birth.

He added that the medical team later performed specialized limb-lengthening procedures to compensate for growth differences and support normal leg development as the child grows older.

Today, after years of treatment and rehabilitation, Adam is living a normal life. He can walk, run, and play with his friends without any noticeable difference from other children his age.

Adam’s mother described the experience as life-changing, emphasizing the importance of seeking multiple expert medical opinions before making irreversible decisions, especially with the advanced medical expertise now available within the UAE.

Dr. Al Obaidi stressed that many complex medical conditions can now be successfully treated within the country, noting that the UAE has become home to world-class medical expertise and advanced technologies capable of handling some of the most challenging and delicate cases according to international standards.
