A Chinese electric hypercar just smashed the 500 km/h barrier, leaving Bugatti further behind

Bugatti has spent decades building some of the fastest cars on the planet, but a Chinese automaker has just taken things to another level. BYD’s luxury performance brand Yangwang has pushed its U9 Xtreme electric hypercar to an astonishing 312.65 mph (503.17 km/h), becoming the first production car to officially break the 500 km/h barrier.

The best part? The record wasn’t set on a purpose-built test track. It happened on a closed stretch of public highway in Abu Dhabi, with German racing driver Marc Basseng behind the wheel. The feat, achieved on November 1, has been officially recognized by the FIA and earned two Guinness World Records for single-direction speed, covering production cars overall and electric production cars specifically.

According to the FIA’s official announcement, the record attempt took place on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road (E11) in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region. Authorities closed a 10-kilometer section of highway, providing a seven-kilometer straight for the record-breaking run. The road was thoroughly cleaned and inspected before testing to eliminate debris that could become dangerous at such extreme speeds.

The road was thoroughly cleaned and inspected before testing to eliminate debris that could become dangerous at such extreme speeds. The first two attempts on October 31 topped out at 490 km/h. Yangwang’s engineers subsequently adjusted the car’s aerodynamics, suspension settings, and tire pressures to improve stability.

Those changes paid off the following day, when Basseng clocked 503.17 km/h, comfortably surpassing the U9 Xtreme’s previous record of 496.22 km/h, set in Germany in September 2025. Keep in mind that this is a verified single-direction speed record, rather than the traditional two-way average used for certain production-car records, which accounts for factors such as wind direction.

The technology behind this speed

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is every bit as underneath its bodywork. It features four independent electric motors, each producing 555 kW and spinning at up to 30,000 rpm. Combined, they deliver more than 3,000 metric horsepower, supported by a 1,200-volt electrical architecture and BYD’s Blade Battery technology.

An advanced torque-vectoring system continuously adjusts power delivery to individual wheels, while the active suspension helps maintain stability at extreme speeds. Yangwang also worked with Giti Tire to develop specialized tires capable of handling the extraordinary forces involved.

BYD plans to build 30 examples of the U9 Xtreme, with customers already finalizing their configurations. The milestone is particularly impressive considering that Bugatti’s Chiron Super Sport 300+ famously reached 304.77 mph in 2019, making it one of the first cars to demonstrate just how far production-car performance could go. Seven years later, a battery-powered hypercar has pushed that benchmark even further.
