AT&T per-day plans put cellular services on your iPad, even if you’re not a customer

AT&T has introduced a new wireless offering called Unlimited Day Pass, giving eligible iPad users access to 24 hours of unlimited cellular data for a flat daily fee of $3 – even if they are not AT&T customers. The new service is designed for Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models with eSIM support and marks one of the first major attempts by a U.S. carrier to offer truly on-demand tablet connectivity without contracts, subscriptions, or long-term commitments.

According to AT&T, the first Unlimited Day Pass is free for customers, limited to one iPad per person. After that, users can purchase additional passes directly from their iPad using a debit or credit card. The company says activation can be completed directly through the iPad’s settings menu without requiring an app or even an active Wi-Fi connection. Users simply need to open the Settings app, navigate to Cellular Data, and add the AT&T Unlimited Day Pass. Once activated, the 24-hour unlimited data session begins shortly afterward.

AT&T says the service is intended for situations where users temporarily need reliable mobile internet access, including travel days, remote work, public transit, or areas without stable Wi-Fi.

AT&T wants to simplify temporary cellular access

The launch reflects a growing shift toward flexible connectivity models instead of traditional monthly carrier plans. Many iPad owners purchase cellular-capable devices but never activate long-term data plans due to cost or infrequent usage. AT&T appears to be targeting exactly that audience. The company says Unlimited Day Pass works regardless of the customer’s primary mobile carrier, allowing even Verizon or T-Mobile users to temporarily access AT&T’s network on their iPad when needed.

Josh Goodell, vice president of Consumer Product Management at AT&T, said the goal is to make connectivity more accessible across the devices people use most without requiring long-term commitments. At launch, the feature is limited to eligible eSIM-enabled iPads, including several recent iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and standard iPad models. Supported devices include newer M-series iPad Air and iPad Pro models, as well as select older cellular iPads compatible with eSIM technology.

The service currently supports only iPads, but AT&T says it plans to expand Unlimited Day Pass to additional 5G-enabled devices in the future, including Android tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and even drones.

More flexible plans may become a bigger industry trend

The broader significance of the launch goes beyond iPads alone. Wireless carriers are increasingly experimenting with shorter-term connectivity options as consumers become less interested in rigid contracts and expensive monthly plans for secondary devices. AT&T also confirmed that additional pass durations are planned for the future. While the company currently offers only 24-hour access, future versions may include weekend passes or week-long connectivity options for travelers and temporary users.

For consumers, the offering could become especially useful for occasional travel, emergency internet access, or remote work situations where paying for a full monthly tablet plan makes little financial sense.

The Unlimited Day Pass is available starting today through supported iPad models in the United States. As eSIM adoption continues growing across devices, services like this could signal a broader move toward more flexible, pay-as-you-go wireless connectivity in the years ahead.
