Meta Platforms was charged by EU antitrust regulators on Monday for failing to comply with landmark tech rules as they took aim at the U.S. company’s newly introduced pay or consent advertising model, already the target of privacy regulators and activists’ ire. The tech giant launched the no-ads subscription service for Facebook and Instagram in Europe last November, saying users who consent to be tracked get a free service which is funded by advertising revenues. Or they could pay for an ad-free service. The European Commission, which acts as the EU competition enforcer, said the binary choice breaches the bloc’s…

India on Monday implemented an overhaul of colonial-era criminal laws, praised as a “watershed” movement by the top judge but which critics said could worsen an already glacially slow pace of justice. Amit Shah, the interior minister, said the codes would help India “become the world’s most modern justice delivery system.” The three overhauled laws – the penal code, and codes relating to criminal procedure and evidence – were passed last year during India’s previous parliament, but only came into effect on Monday. Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party scored historic gains to win the first round of France’s parliamentary election, but the final outcome will depend on days of alliance-building before next week’s run-off vote. The RN and allies had 33% of the vote, followed by a leftwing bloc with 28% and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrists with just 20%, official results from the interior ministry showed on Monday. That was a huge setback for Macron who had called the snap election after his ticket was trounced by the RN in European Parliament elections last month. But whether the anti-immigrant, eurosceptic…
Copper prices firmed on Monday due to support from a weaker dollar and some stronger data from China’s manufacturing sector, but worries about demand in the top consumer fuelled by climbing inventories capped gains. Traders said the lower US currency, which makes dollar-priced metals cheaper for holders of other currencies and could boost demand, had triggered a flurry of copper buying by funds. Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) was up 0.6% at $9,615 a metric tonne at 1110 GMT. Prices of the metal used in power and construction have dropped more than 10% since hitting all-time highs…

England great James Anderson will join the team’s backroom staff as a fast-bowling mentor when he retires from Test cricket following next week’s series opener against the West Indies at Lord’s. The 41-year-old is the first seamer and only third bowler to have taken 700 Test wickets after spinners Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan. Anderson, however, has decided to end his Test career after England made it clear they wanted to move on ahead of the 2025/26 Ashes. But England managing director Rob Key told reporters on Monday: “After the Lord’s Test, Jimmy will continue in our set-up, and he’ll…
