Twenty years ago, on March 8, a NASA Mars rover made history when it captured the first image of Earth from the surface of another planet. The rover, Spirit, landed on the martian surface on January 2004. Soon after landing in Mars’ Gusev Crater, Spirit wasted little time in beaming back images of its new surroundings. A couple of months later, it snapped a mind-blowing image (above) offering a view of Earth that was as fresh as it was astonishing. “Shortly before sunrise [on March 8], Spirit’s camera managed to capture Earth as a bright star, appearing much as Venus…
One of the most captivating exhibitions that opened during Alserkal Art Week is a photographic series titled ‘Watan’ by French-Uruguayan photographer Graciela Magnoni, and curated by the Pakistani artist, educator and writer Salima Hashmi. Watan, meaning homeland, explores the partition of Punjab (when India and Pakistan got independence in 1947) through the lens of loss and remembrance. At the time of partition more than 1 million people were killed and more than 10 million were displaced, most of who were able to return to their watan again. Conceived as a ‘visual poem’ by Magnoni, the exhibition is a collection of…

Keeping with the tradition, Ramadan cannons will boom from multiple locations across Dubai during the holy month. The firing of cannons to mark the end of the fasting period daily during Ramadan has been a tradition in the UAE since the 1960s. Seven locations will have fixed cannons that will be fired throughout the month. Every day, a single shot is fired to announce the end of fasting and the start of iftar, and two shots are fired to signal the beginning of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr. I’m guilty, it seems, of using “fossil words”. These are words deriving from older variations of the English language that have fallen out of common usage and have become largely obsolete, but which have nonetheless persisted in contemporary language. Fossil words occur in idioms or phrases where they have specific meanings, so their usage is restricted to that particular context. “Turpitude”, for instance, meaning depraved or wicked behaviour or character, is rarely employed in any other context than in the expression “moral turpitude”. “Turpitude” has essentially become fixed or fossilised alongside the term “moral”. Hence it’s a “fossil word”. Other…
