Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won re-election for a fifth term Sunday, officials said, following a boycott led by an opposition party she branded a “terrorist organisation”. Hasina’s ruling Awami League “has won more than 50 percent seats,” an Election Commission spokesman told AFP, with counting ongoing. She has presided over breakneck economic growth in a country once beset by grinding poverty, but her government has been accused of rampant human rights abuses and a ruthless opposition crackdown. Her party faced almost no effective rivals in the seats it contested, but it avoided fielding candidates in a few constituencies,…

Let us be perfectly clear: When you see through all the smoke and glitz and glamour, transparency very much rules the early hours of CES 2024. The latest entry comes from Samsung, which is hardly a stranger to clear displays. The new hotness, though, is a transparent micro-LED display. And let’s be clear what this is not: Unlike what we’ve just seen elsewhere, Samsung’s transparent micro-LED isn’t being showcased in a consumer-ready product. This isn’t a television you’ll be able to purchase later this year, though Samsung does say that the micro-LED is good for “a clear, unobstructed picture for…

From home-delivering your food, groceries and medicines to pampering you at hotels and restaurants, the UAE’s service sector workers try to go above and beyond what’s required of them. Often seen as the face of their respective companies, service with a smile often results in a second salary of sorts for workers in the form of tips. While it’s customary for customers to express their appreciation with tips, it isn’t a mandatory requirement. There isn’t a fixed amount or even a general consensus of what an ideal tip in the UAE is. Some pay 10 to 15 per cent, while…

When you first cast a glimpse at the Music Frame, you think, “Huh. That looks pretty cool.” And it does, because it’s a pretty modern-looking picture frame. And because Samsung is showing it off at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, it has some pretty snazzy art tucked inside. Turn on some sounds — be it music, or traditional audio from a TV show or movie — and you think, “Huh. That picture frame sounds pretty cool, too.” And that, in a nutshell, is the Music Frame. It’s a quintessential Samsung product, and very much the sort of thing that makes…

Born in Moscow and raised in Syria, Dina Saadi discovered a passion for art from a very young age. As a hyperactive child, her mother observed that the only things capable of holding her attention for extended periods were paper and colouring pens. This creative outlet allowed her mum to manage other tasks while Saadi was engrossed in drawing, sometimes for hours. Saadi’s earliest memory of creating art dates back to when she was only three years old, drawing what she called a “potato” – scribbling overlapped circles on paper. “From the moment I was handed my first set of…

Samsung announced a mysterious new monitor at CES 2024 called The Link — and even though it wasn’t seen in person, they looked absolutely fascinating in the photo that was shared. Very little information was given about them, but here’s what we do know: The Link monitors are “the world’s thinnest and lightest 4K 32-inch LED monitors,” and can “daisy-chain” together using pogo pins. That means connecting these monitors together would be completely wireless. The problem Samsung is attempting to solve is to make the display in multi-monitor setups less “uneven” and “mismatched.” Samsung says you can connect “as many…

Beirut airport on Sunday came under a cyberattack, Lebanon’s state news agency said, with footage shared by local media showing anti-Hezbollah messages had replaced screen displays at its terminal. Hezbollah has exchanged near-daily cross-border fire with its arch foe Israel since war with Hamas broke out on October 7, with the Lebanese movement saying it was acting in support of its Palestinian ally in Gaza.
