For the first time in the Middle East

Direct Anterior ” Bikini” incision total hip replacement with robot-assisted planning technology in Dubai

Dubai – 29 January 2025

Dr. Ali Al Baloushi, President of the Emirates Orthopedic Society, expert in artificial intelligence and robotic assisted surgery and head of Orthocure Medical Center

Dr. Ali Al Baloushi, President of the Emirates Orthopedic Society, expert in artificial intelligence and robotic assisted surgery and head of Orthocure Medical Center, revealed the introduction of the Direct Anterior ” Bikini” incision total hip replacement with the help of robotic technology for the first time in the Middle East in the UAE.

Dr. Ali said that the technology, which is the latest in the world, can be applied on all patients who need hip replacement except those who are very obese or hyper muscular and severe congenital hip dislocation, which may make surgery technically difficult even in the most experienced hands, in which case a more modified hip treatment but robot-assisted is possible to obtain better results still.

In turn, Dr. Ikram Nizam, consultant specialist orthopedic hip surgeon from Australia, an inventor of the ” Bikini hip replacement ” approach which was published in international journals after being approved by official authorities, said that the technique is the latest of its kind in the world and has been used in some specialized centers in Europe and have achieved tremendous results for patients who have undergone anterior hip replacement operations, pointing out that the most important advantages of hip replacement surgery with ” bikini” incision include better aesthetic scars, less pain/swelling after surgery, where muscles/tendons are not cut, relatively Less blood loss during surgery, less muscle weakness after surgery, early movement (as early as 3-4 hours), quicker recovery, hidden scar in the groin, lower risk of dislocation, quicker return to driving within weeks after surgery, early return to work with all activities of daily living.

Dr. Ikram Nizam explained that the main indications for anterior hip surgery are major degenerative arthritis (primary or secondary) or inflammatory process (rheumatoid) that affects the hip joint and leads to increased pain and decreased mobility and function, and surgery can also be performed on postraumatic hip osteoarthritis.

This approach can be applied to almost all patients who need a hip joint replacement except those who are very obese or muscular, which can make surgery technically difficult even in the most experienced hands. Direct Anterior hip replacement may also be difficult to perform in cases of complex revision surgery, in these cases traditional hip operations with a conventional opening are better, but with the help of robots we can also improve the speed of recovery and the patient satisfaction after the operation.
