Greek travelling theatre troupe brings message of peace to SIBF 2025

The performance of Yiannis Ritsos’ Philoctetes transformed an ancient myth into a modern reflection on resilience and peace at the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair

Sharjah, November 7, 2025

Celebrating Greece’s rich cultural heritage and its age-long connection with art, poetry, and philosophy, the Greek Travelling Theatre Troupe enacted a theatrical monologue of Philoctetes by the late Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos as part of their Guest of Honour programme at Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) 2025.

Performed by Kiliaki Vlachogianni, this staging of Philoctetes provided a reflective take on suffering, endurance, and the universal desire for peace. While the story is based on the Greek myth of the wounded warrior left on an island, the play connected it to modern-day themes of survival and resilience in the face of storms.

“This is a play for peace, for love between people; a play that shows what we all need today: peace,” said one of the organisers.

A defining moment in the act that made a visible impact on the audience was when he directly spoke to the next generation, hoping they would reclaim the glory of their forefathers through their own will and sacrifices. He passionately called on them to learn from history but to always lead with courage, empathy, and humility.

The performance ended with the renowned wartime song “We’ll Meet Again,” sending a message of hope and reconciliation.

Through this moving performance, the Greek travelling theatre troupe fostered meaningful cultural exchange and highlighted how literature and performance can connect languages, histories, and generations.

The Greek Travelling Theatre Troupe will also perform on November 7 and 8 at SIBF 2025.

Taking place at Expo Centre Sharjah from November 6 to 17, SIBF 2025 will host 2,350 publishers and exhibitors from 118 countries. This year’s fair will feature more than 1,200 activities led by 251 guests from 66 countries, including over 300 cultural events and 750 workshops for children and adults.
