Motorola’s slick new charging puck joins Android’s tiny magnetic club

I’ve been waiting for magnetic charging to stop being mostly an iPhone and Pixel party, and now, Motorola might be looking to join the club. Leaker Evan Blass has shared images of an unreleased Moto Snap magnetic wireless charger. The accessory is a slim circular charging puck with Motorola’s batwing logo, a braided cable, and a USB-C connector, giving it a very familiar MagSafe/Pixelsnap-style design.

Motorola hasn’t announced the charger yet, and details such as pricing, charging output, and release date remain unknown. But it arrives just after the launch of the Motorola Edge 70 Max, which supports magnetic charging.

Motorola finally has a phone ready for it

Just recently, the Edge 70 Max debuted as Motorola’s first phone with native 25W Qi2 magnetic wireless charging, which means the magnets needed to align a compatible charger are built directly into the phone. Motorola’s own specifications confirm that a 25W Qi2 magnetic charger is required to hit its maximum wireless charging speed. So a Moto Snap give Motorola a first-party companion for the feature.

The leaked images don’t reveal whether Moto Snap itself delivers the full 25W supported by the Edge 70 Max, so I wouldn’t assume that yet. What we can see is a far more portable design than Motorola’s older upright wireless charging stands, with the puck snapping directly onto the back of a compatible phone.

Android needs more of this

Moto Snap from the side

Google showed how useful native magnetic charging could be when it introduced Pixelsnap with the Pixel 10 series. Built-in magnets let compatible chargers, stands, grips, wallets, and other accessories attach without requiring a special case. I believe that the convenience belongs on far more Android phones.

Electronics, Adapter, Headphones

This is true for more than just charging, as the magnets open the door to fun new accessories. With the Edge 70 Max, Motorola demonstrated that native Qi2 doesn’t need to remain exclusive to Google’s flagship Pixels. So a first-party Moto Snap charger makes the feature look increasingly like the beginning of a broader Motorola accessory strategy.
