PlayStation State of Play returns June 2 with Marvel’s Wolverine leading the lineup

The Summer Game Fest season is officially kicking off now, and Sony clearly does not want to sit quietly on the sidelines this year. The company has officially confirmed that the next PlayStation State of Play showcase will air on June 2, featuring more than 60 minutes of PS5 game announcements and updates. The biggest confirmed highlight so far is Marvel’s Wolverine, which Sony says will receive a fresh new look during the presentation.

Sony confirms Wolverine showcase for June 2 State of Play

According to Sony’s official announcement, the showcase will focus on upcoming PS5 titles from both PlayStation Studios and third-party partners. While the company is still keeping most of the lineup secret, multiple reports suggest Wolverine will likely act as the main headliner for the event. As such, be ready to receive a fresh look at its “brutal and relentless” combat system.

The timing and scale of this State of Play make complete sense. Sony has made headlines recently after reports indicated they are pulling back on bringing major single-player exclusives to PC, signaling a renewed focus on console supremacy. Coming off the heels of what many fans called an “all-timer” showcase back in February, an hour-long State of Play just days before Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is exactly the kind of flex PlayStation needs to remind everyone why PS5 exclusives still dominate the conversation.

State of Play season means peak gaming copium

What really has the community buzzing is how unusually early Sony announced this State of Play. The company normally gives fans barely enough time to make popcorn before a showcase goes live, so revealing a full hour-long event nearly two weeks in advance has immediately sent Reddit and X into full clown-makeup mode.

Beyond Wolverine, fans are desperately hoping for gameplay from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, updates on Marvel Tokon, a tease for whatever Sony Santa Monica is secretly building next, and maybe even a release date for Kena 2. Meanwhile, the more optimistic crowd is already convincing themselves that Final Fantasy VII Part 3 could randomly show up, too, because apparently, expectations are no longer bound by reality.

Of course, no PlayStation hype cycle is complete without absolute delusion kicking in. Some fans are jokingly preparing for another PS Plus price hike announcement, while others are once again summoning the ancient forbidden magic of “Bloodborne Remaster” predictions like it’s a yearly ritual at this point. And somehow, despite Rockstar having absolutely no reason to appear here, GTA VI trailer speculation has also infected State of Play discussions simply because gamers have gone over a year without fresh footage. Honestly, though, Sony does need a strong showcase right now, especially with Xbox aggressively pushing Game Pass, multiplatform launches, and Forza Horizon 6 momentum heading into the second half of the year.

Then again, all this chaos probably exists for a reason. Sony has already confirmed special live State of Play screenings at Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the US, and companies usually do not rent out movie theaters just to announce two indie remasters and a controller color refresh. So whatever PlayStation has planned for June 2, Sony clearly thinks it is big enough to get fans out of their homes and into actual seats. Let’s hope the event delivers.
