Scientists have figured out how to send smells over the internet, and coffee is just the beginning

Imagine smelling freshly brewed coffee through a video call or getting a whiff of perfume before buying it online. Scientists are bringing that idea closer to reality with Scentronic, an AI-powered system that can detect smells, transmit scent data over the internet, and recreate aromas remotely. Developed by researchers from Ohio State University and Zhejiang Laboratory in China, the research, published in Science Advances, explores how digital scent transmission could add an entirely new dimension to online communication. Your next shopping session might literally come with a sniff test.

How does sending smells over the internet work?

Scentronic works a little like a digital nose paired with a tiny perfume dispenser. Its electronic nose uses six gas sensors to detect chemical compounds associated with an aroma. AI then identifies the smell and transmits the relevant data to a receiving device, which recreates it using scented liquids and miniature vibrating atomizers that release tiny droplets into the air.

The prototype currently supports five aromas: coffee, beer, red wine, cake, and orange. In tests involving 14 volunteers, participants correctly identified the recreated smells around 73% of the time. That’s an encouraging start, but the technology still has a way to go before it can fool every nose in the room.

Scentronic's wearable designs and applications: (D) Wristband, handheld, and necklace-style olfactory interfaces; (E) wireless control of a multisensory stimulation cup; (F) potential uses in social interaction, online shopping, and remote healthcare.

It also doesn’t transmit actual odor molecules across the internet. Instead, it identifies a scent and recreates an approximation using ingredients already loaded into the receiving device.

Your virtual world could soon come with a smell

The researchers see potential applications in online shopping, digital communication, and virtual reality. Imagine exploring a virtual bakery and smelling freshly baked cake, or testing a fragrance remotely before spending money on a bottle. The team also developed a prototype cup that combines scent with flavored liquids, letting users select a virtual drink through a mixed-reality headset and experience its corresponding taste and aroma.

Of course, there’s a catch. Scentronic can’t reproduce every smell on demand, and its current capabilities depend on the aromas its ingredients can recreate. Still, the research suggests that digital experiences could eventually engage more than just our eyes and ears. We’ve spent decades making the internet look and sound better. Now scientists want it to smell better, too. Just hope nobody figures out how to transmit the smell of a sweaty gaming room.
