Trying to cancel PS Plus? Sony might just make you an offer

Ever tried cancelling a subscription only to be greeted with a “Wait! Here’s a discount!” message? It looks like PlayStation has started borrowing that playbook. A growing number of users report being offered discounts of up to 50% on PlayStation Plus when attempting to cancel their memberships, making it one of the biggest retention offers Sony has rolled out in recent years.

Not everyone gets the same deal

Based on reports shared across Reddit, the offers appear to vary depending on the subscription tier and duration. The most generous deal seems to be 50% off a three-month PlayStation Plus Extra membership, while some users have reported receiving 25% to 33% discounts on longer 12-month plans. So far, there doesn’t appear to be a universal offer, suggesting Sony is selectively targeting users who are about to leave the service.

Interestingly, the timing has caught the community’s attention. The offers began surfacing shortly after Sony’s controversial decision to phase out first-party PS5 disc production, which prompted some players to publicly announce they were cancelling their PS Plus subscriptions in protest. While there’s no evidence that the discounts are directly linked to that backlash, the overlap has certainly fueled speculation online.

A classic retention strategy, just with bigger discounts

Retention discounts aren’t new. Streaming services, internet providers, and even gyms have long offered special deals to customers on the verge of leaving. What’s unusual here is the size of the discount. Outside limited-time promotions like Days of Play, Sony rarely discounts PlayStation Plus by as much as 50%, making these offers stand out.

Whether this becomes a permanent part of Sony’s subscription strategy remains to be seen. For now, it appears to be a targeted experiment rather than a public sale. So if you’re thinking about cancelling your PS Plus membership anyway… don’t be too surprised if PlayStation suddenly decides you’re worth hanging on to.
