Your next Galaxy Z Fold could get a 20% shallower crease

Samsung Display used CES 2026 to show off a foldable OLED that could make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 crease less annoying in daily use. The key claim is simple, the crease depth looks about 20% shallower than the Galaxy Z fold 7.

That sort of change matters because the crease is still the first thing your eyes catch on a big bright foldable screen. It can look like a dark trench on videos and games, and it can flash a bright reflection when a light hits the hinge area.

Still, this isn’t locked in for the next Galaxy Fold yet. ZDNet Korea reports Samsung’s MX division may decide by the end of Q1 2026, and cost increases tied to the new build are part of what’s being weighed.

The materials behind the crease

This isn’t just about tightening the hinge. The work is happening inside the display stack, where the layers have to bend thousands of times without taking a permanent set.

One change centers on the optical clear adhesive between layers. The idea is to let the stack flex and recover more smoothly during folding, so the bend doesn’t stamp in as deep of a line over time.

The report also points to a sturdier reinforcement layer. Instead of relying on a plastic PET film, Samsung Display is linked to a switch toward a metal plate for firmer support under the panel.

Apple fans should temper expectations

Whenever Samsung Display shows new foldable tech, the Apple speculation follows fast. This time, the same reporting argues this specific panel is a bad fit for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

The reasoning comes down to different reinforcement approaches under the screen. So even if the tech is impressive, it’s better read as Samsung pushing its own foldables forward, not a sneak peek at Apple hardware.

Watch the Q1 decision

If the Galaxy Z Fold 8 crease is your dealbreaker, the most important date isn’t a launch rumor, it’s the decision window. By late March 2026, we should have a clearer sense of whether Samsung is willing to absorb the higher costs to ship this thinner crease panel.

If you’re buying soon, check out the best foldables out now if you can’t wait for the next Samsung foldable flagship. If you can wait, keep an eye out for supply chain chatter and any hints that the Fold 8 display stack is getting a meaningful rework.
