Microsoft finally shares details of the Xbox Project Helix console and its AMD heart

At the 2026 Game Developer Conference, Microsoft finally unraveled the mysteries of its next-gen gaming console, the Xbox “Project Helix.” The company is continuing its partnership with AMD to develop the upcoming Xbox console, and has also revealed when the kit will land in the lap of developers.

What’s inside the Xbox Project Helix?

“Project Helix is powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR to unlock what comes next,” says the company. Microsoft says the console’s custom AMD chip will support the next-gen iteration of DirectX and big improvements in ray-tracing.

🚀 Big moment for the future of gaming.

Thrilled to partner with @Xbox and @asha_shar on Project Helix, a multi-year deep co-engineering partnership driving next-gen performance, breakthrough graphics, and compatibility with your existing Xbox game library.

On that note, AMD will also lend a helping hand by implementing an advanced version of its FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) upscaling tech to boost the frame output in games. AMD recently started rolling out the FSR “Redstone” version, so it would be interesting to see how well it stacks up against the version that is in development for Project Helix.

Jack Huynh, who is the SVP & GM of Computing & Graphics at AMD, wrote on X that the next iteration will be called FSR Diamond, adding that it is natively optimized for the Project Helix console and deeply integrated with the game Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK), which includes all the tools and libararies required for developing games targeted at the next console.

Simply put, visual performance is going to level up with more realistic shadows and reflections in games. Notably, the console will push an entirely new version of ray generation (for ray-tracing) and path tracing. Microsoft also notes that the upcoming Xbox console will rely on next-gen ML upscaling and multi-frame generation tech.

Will the Xbox Project Helix play PC games? Yes, definitely

As part of its Xbox Developer Summit keynote at the 2026 Game Developer Conference, Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox Project Helix console will run PC games, as well. Do keep in mind that Project Helix will enter alpha testing for developers in 2027, which. means a commercial release will take at least a year, or more.

Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console.

Notably, Microsoft is also easing the game-building process for developers. Instead of developing separate versions for the PC and Xbox console, developers will only be required to create a single build that will run across both formats. This will be made possible by a unified development environment, with minimal differences in the game code.

For consumers, they will be able to take advantage of the Xbox Play Anywhere scheme, which allows them to pay for a game once and play on any platform of their choice. The Xbox Project Helix console will lean heavily into that policy. It would be interesting to see how many developers are on board with the hybrid vision, and more importantly, how well the economy of selling such games turns out.

So far, rumors have predicted that the Xbox Project Helix console could cost around $1,200, which doesn’t seem like a bad price, especially given the rising costs of building a PC as memory prices keep skyrocketing. But as my colleague and avid gamer, Varun, argues, a sticker price close to $1,000 for the upcoming console would make a lot of sense in the current market situation.
