For most laptop displays, sunlight is the main antagonist. The brighter the day, the harder they work, and the more you start hunting for some shade. The Radiant Monitor 2 takes a different approach. Eazeye’s new portable monitor uses a 15.6-inch transflective LCD, which means it can use ambient light to improve visibility instead of fighting it entirely with a backlight.
In bright conditions, the backlight can be turned off, dropping power consumption to around 3W. Sunlight becomes part of the display system rather than the thing ruining your screen.
Sounds similar to a Kindle, but not entirely
The concept might seem familiar if you have used E-ink devices from Amazon or Boox. Kindles, Kindle Scribe models, and Boox’s ePaper tablets and monitors are built around reflective, paper-like displays that work well in bright light and sip power. Radiant Monitor 2 is chasing a similar comfort-first idea, but it is not an E Ink monitor. It is a transflective LCD, so you still get a 60Hz refresh rate, 5ms response time, and cleaner motion than typical ePaper displays.
This makes it more practical for laptop work like browsing, spreadsheets, and general multitasking. The trade-off is that it will not fully behave like a conventional IPS or OLED portable monitor either. The screen is Full HD, has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and Eazeye lists the viewing angle at 65 degrees horizontally and vertically, which is much narrower than typical mainstream LCD panels.
Not exactly lightweight
Radiant Monitor 2 also includes 10-point capacitive touch, USB-C and HDMI, a magnetic folio case, and 75 x 75mm VESA mounting. It can run at up to 8W with the backlight at maximum brightness, and Eazeye says its upgraded full-spectrum LED backlight is designed for improved low-light use.
At 1.77kg, this isn’t exactly a lightweight piece of tech. It is relatively heavy for a 15.6-inch portable monitor, so you can’t just throw it a bag and forget about it. The Radiant Monitor 2 costs $789, excluding shipping, duties, and taxes.
