MediaTek launches Dimensity 9500s and 8500 to power next-gen flagship smartphones

MediaTek just dropped two new chipsets, and it feels like they are finally executing on a promise they made a while ago: bringing flagship-level power to phones that don’t necessarily cost a thousand dollars. The new Dimensity 9500s and Dimensity 8500 aren’t just incremental updates; they seem to be a deliberate attempt to close the gap between “good enough” and “top tier.”

The Dimensity 9500s is clearly the headline act here. It’s built on that cutting-edge 3nm process, which is a big deal for efficiency. What is interesting is the architecture—they are using an “All Big Core” design, meaning they have ditched the tiny efficiency cores that usually handle background tasks. Instead, you get a massive Cortex-X925 ultra core running at a blistering 3.73GHz, backed up by Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 cores.

In plain English? This thing is a beast

It’s built to chew through heavy gaming and on-device AI without breaking a sweat. The Immortalis-G925 GPU is arguably the star for gamers, bringing advanced ray tracing and new frame-rate tech (MAGT 3.0) that should keep games smooth without draining the battery in an hour.

Then there is the AI side of things. We are seeing a huge push for on-device generative AI, and the 9500s is optimized exactly for that. It’s not just about flashy chatbots; it’s about practical stuff like fixing your photos instantly or summarizing messy meeting notes. The camera support also looks wild, with 8K Dolby Vision recording and a new ISP that supposedly handles motion tracking much better than before.

On the slightly more affordable side, we have the Dimensity 8500

This one is built on a 4nm process and takes a slightly different approach. It uses eight Cortex-A725 cores, which is a smart move for battery life while still offering plenty of speed (up to 3.4GHz). MediaTek claims the new Mali-G720 GPU inside offers a 25% performance jump over the last generation while using 20% less power. For most people, this is the chip that will matter most because it brings high-end features like ray tracing and AI photography to the phones people actually buy in volume.

Smartphone gaming

The big picture here is that MediaTek is raising the floor for smartphone performance. Later this year, when you pick up a “premium” phone that isn’t quite a “flagship,” you probably won’t feel like you are compromising on speed or camera quality anymore. Whether you care about gaming, battery life, or just having a phone that doesn’t lag when you switch apps, these new chips are good news for everyone.
