Satellite 5G could be the next big upgrade for Apple’s upcoming ‘Pro’ iPhones

So far, satellite connectivity on iPhones has focused on low-bandwidth emergency tools, including Emergency SOS via Satellite (2022) and Messages via Satellite (2024).

However, with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple could change the smartphone-satellite communication paradigm in a way no Android manufacturer has yet, by introducing “5G via Satellite.”

Over the weekend, the YouTube channel Front Page Tech published a video about the iPhone 18 Pro’s design. The video discusses a punch-hole camera in the top left corner of the screen, along with a “structured light” Face ID module that lies beneath the screen (next to the camera cutout).

From emergency texts to real connectivity

Apart from showing a couple of video renders of the phone, the YouTube channel mentioned a groundbreaking feature coming to this year’s Pro iPhones: 5G via Satellite.

Shortly after that, the Korean tipster @yuex1122 posted about the same feature on a Naver post, saying that the “iPhone 18 Pro is said to be the first smartphone capable of 5G satellite communication.”

Since this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this feature, the likelihood of the purported iPhones getting it is incredibly high. But what exactly does 5G via Satellite mean, and how is it different from the Emergency SOS and Messages via Satellite features available on iPhones?

The feature enables iPhones to access 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) directly via low-Earth-orbit satellites with Apple’s new C2 modem (which should be capable of handling both terrestrial and satellite-based communication networks).

While Emergency SOS via Satellite or Messages via Satellite can only provide limited bandwidth via NTN networks (in the Kbps range; capable of sending/receiving text messages), 5G via Satellite should unlock high-speed internet access in areas without cellular reception.

The bandwidth should be sufficient for voice calls, high-definition photo sharing, and even support video streaming. However, none of the sources have discussed how Apple could implement the feature on its iPhones, whether it will remain free (highly unlikely), or which carrier services it will be compatible with.

While more information about the feature should surface on the internet shortly, one thing is clear: 5G via Satellite is a groundbreaking feature, one that will give the iPhone 18 Pro models a serious edge over other Android flagships available in U.S. markets in September 2026.
