Smartphones with a 185Hz screen are next, but the US will miss out, again

We’ve seen 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, and now a whopping 185Hz refresh rate on smartphones. The iQOO 16 is rumored to jump from 144Hz on the iQOO 15 straight to 185Hz. With a crisp 2K OLED panel, this phone is going to feel incredibly smooth. I have to admit, it’s a little sad that the US won’t get to see it again.

What makes this phone stand out?

A refresh rate of 185Hz is already impressive, but the iQOO 16 seems to be packing even more firepower. Rumors (according to Smart Pikachu) suggest it will sport a 200MP primary camera, a 50MP periscope lens, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera on the back, covering almost every photography moment you can think of. On the performance front, the phone is expected to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, all for around $725.

iQOO has always been known for gaming, and this combination of a 2K OLED panel with a 185Hz refresh rate and a top-tier Snapdragon processor is likely to deliver buttery-smooth gameplay and snappy performance. Battery life and charging speeds haven’t been confirmed yet, but with specs like these, this phone is definitely one to watch.

iQOO 16 is playing in a league of its own

Compare the iQOO 16 to other phones under $800, like the iPhone 17 and the Samsung Galaxy S26, and it’s in a completely different ballpark. Those phones don’t even hit 144Hz, which is fine since each brand has its own approach. But the iQOO 16? With a rumored 185Hz refresh rate, it’s entering uncharted territory.

I can barely imagine how silky-smooth scrolling and gaming will feel on a smartphone like this, and trust me, I’d line up just to try it. This phone is flirting with speed in a way the others can only watch from the sidelines.
