The Call of Duty movie is set in the Modern Warfare universe, and it could lead to a whole franchise

The upcoming Call of Duty movie just became much more interesting for longtime fans. Director and co-writer Peter Berg has confirmed that the film will be set in the Modern Warfare universe, finally answering the question every gamer has been asking since this project was announced.

That reveal is a genuinely big deal, since Modern Warfare is home to some of the series’ most iconic characters and stories, the kind fans have spent nearly two decades attached to. It also hints that Paramount may be laying the foundation for something much bigger than a single movie. According to Variety, the studio’s agreement with Activision leaves room to expand Call of Duty across film and television if the first movie succeeds.

Why did Hollywood choose the Modern Warfare universe?

Berg shared the news during the Call of Duty in Culture panel at Fanatics Fest in New York while promoting Modern Warfare 4. The choice makes sense because the Modern Warfare games transformed the franchise when they moved away from World War II and introduced a modern military setting.

Ever since, those games have followed the legendary Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 squad hunting down the terrorist mastermind Vladimir Makarov across global conflicts. That saga rolls on in Modern Warfare 4, this time dropping players into a war between North and South Korea, cementing it as one of the franchise’s most beloved and recognizable corners.

With Call of Duty now under Xbox thanks to Microsoft’s Activision buyout, this movie carries some serious weight as one of gaming’s biggest names finally makes its live-action debut.

Could this become Call of Duty’s own cinematic universe?

The movie was first announced back in September 2025, with Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone and Landman, co-writing the script alongside Berg, whose resume includes the gripping Lone Survivor. Paramount has already scheduled its release for June 30, 2028.

Plot details are still under wraps, but sources told Variety the studio’s multiyear deal with Activision stretches well past just one film, leaving the door wide open for a broader Call of Duty universe across both movies and TV.

Kicking things off with Modern Warfare hands Paramount a ready-made world stacked with legendary heroes, memorable villains, and endless conflicts that could easily fuel sequels and spinoffs for years. If that plan actually pans out, this movie might not just be a one-off gaming adaptation. It could end up being the opening mission in a much bigger, interconnected Call of Duty universe.
